Training Options

Two-day, One-day, Half-day NVivo Introduction Courses
Start your qualitative project with our two-day, one-day, or half-day hands-on training. These courses are designed for a complete beginner, as well as those who have used previous versions of the software or are self-taught and want to upgrade their skill. These courses provide a thorough hands-on overview of NVivo using a sample project. After the overview, participants will create a practice project from scratch. Sample project data is provided. Participants may use their own data after the initial practice.
Course Aim
The aim of this training is for participants to gain confidence in setting up the ‘scaffold’ of a project, importing data, coding, annotating, memoing, linking ideas, exploring, probing, visualising data, and gathering evidence for writing up findings.
Small Class Size
To ensure that high quality and responsive learning support is given to each participant on our public courses, we take a small class with a maximum of 9 participants. Therefore, it is important you register your interest early to secure a place.
For Client Site training, the class size is up to 25 participants. Please see the detail information such as booking, cost, etc for client site administrators.
Pre-requisite
No previous knowledge of NVivo is required. Please see course details below for the course reminders.
Teaching Methods
The teaching method is mainly hands-on. It is supported by presentation, demonstration, discussions, questions and answers.
The tutor will screen share to examine each participant’s project on their coding, node structure, and classification, thereby providing suggestions, corrections and efficiency tips. This will ensure that your coding and node structure will support in-depth data analysis.
Training Workbook and Video Recording
Each participant receives an instructional workbook and the video recording of the training.
Certificate of Completion & After Training Support
Each participant receives a certificate of completion and ongoing after training support via phone, email and screen sharing.
2 Days Course Outline
Day 1: Explore NVivo and Create a New Project
In this session you will learn to:
- Explore the functionalities of NVivo.
- Create a practice project and storage folders for your data sources.
- Import sample interview transcripts into the practice project.
- Learn to code a transcript into both “open-codes” and “thematic coding framework”.
- Annotate your coding references.
- Create memos to record field notes, non-verbal data, reflective notes, and coding summaries. You may even create a memo for your project audit trail.
- Attached memos to project items.
- Examine your coding using coding stripes, chart, and explore diagram.
- Classify the individuals and focus group interview data by the speakers/cases with their demographic attributes and values.
- Learn to use Mindmap tool in NVivo to create a structured coding framework for the pre-defined themes.
Questions and Answers session to clarify the day’s coverage.
Day 2: Advance functions in NVivo
In this session you will learn to:
- Organise your growing open-codes by clusters of related themes into thematic coding structure.
- Use a number of queries: word frequency, text search, coding, matrix, crosstab, and group queries to ask questions and gather coded references to answer them.
- You will learn how to save output, export them into MS Word for writing-up.
- Use sets and search folders to organise and filter your data for specific research questions.
- Create relationship types and use them to construct relationship nodes to code into.
- Use concept maps, project maps to visually explore patterns and relationships in your data.
- Explore Framework matrices for case-by-case analysis for IPA methodology.
Setup the Scaffolding of Your Own Project
- Setup your own project and translate all the skills learnt applicable to your own project.
- Work on your own project and receive individual support from the tutor.
Advice is given on how to setup and manage a group project involving a number of researchers or coders from different geographical locations, all working on the same project.
Course Reminders
Practice interview data files are provided for those who have not collected data as yet. Download it here.
Bring any interview transcripts you may have to work on.
If you do not have NVivo installed on your laptop, you can download a 14-days FREE trial copy from this link. The training is delivered using the newer version of software called NVivo. It has no version no. This version supersedes NVivo 12, thus version 12 is not the newer version.
In addition to the versions is also the platforms – Windows and Macs. The software is fundamentally different between Windows and Macs. Mac users should NOT attend Windows class and vice versa. On the public courses list, we have created separate classes for Windows and for Macs.
- Windows users with older versions (11 or 12) can still attend, but please be aware that your interface will look different! Some menus are named differently from the newer version. The training will be delivered from the newer version.
- There are separate training dates for Mac users. Mac users with older versions and those who are unable to upgrade to the latest version, can still attend the Mac training. Please note that the interface of the older versions are different from the newer version. The training will be delivered from the newer version.

Access to NVivo Software
What is the latest version of NVivo?
The latest version of NVivo was released in March 2020 and it supersedes NVivo 12. The latest version of NVivo doesn’t have a version number assigned to it, it’s simply called ‘NVivo’. You may follow the tab below to download the NVivo.
You will need to have a myNVivo account to use the latest version of NVivo. The first time you open NVivo, you will be required to enter your myNVivo username and password to activate NVivo. The latest version of NVivo does not require a license key to activate the software. If you have been provided with an Enterprise license for the latest version of NVivo, you may enter the license key and activate NVivo without signing in to a myNVivo account.
